The Belgian will drive the #98 Insulco Motorsport98 Ford Mustang
Daytona Beach, FL - March 25th, 2015 - Having spent these last few seasons competing in historic circuit racing, Eric De Doncker is readying himself this 2015 season for his big return to compete in a ‘modern’ discipline. Under the renowned Motorsport 98 banner, the Belgian driver will be entering a spectacular Ford Mustang in an international competition that is becoming ever more prestigious: the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series!
"I’m not giving up the classic cars, which remain a delight to drive, Eric explained. I intend to compete in two or three events this year. But the rather uneven level of driving in these competitions, as also the high costs of these cars, has prompted me to go on the look out for a modern racing car. I know the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series well, having previously competed in it. I know it will be hard pushing, nudging and breaking, but it’s all part of the show! On top of that it’s a European competition officially recognised by the legendary NASCAR, proof that Jerome Galpin and his team have worked hard these last few years. I can’t wait to dive back into that type of level..."
For his major comeback in the European NASCAR, Eric De Doncker will be linking up with another tradition: driving a Ford Mustang in the Insulco colours... "This brings back memories of the wonderful years in the GT4 European Cup with the Mustang FR500 GT4 Insulco, Eric smiled. And I must admit that driving this Mustang in NASCAR version reminds me of the GT4 in certain aspects. I had the opportunity of becoming acquainted with this muscle car during some test sessions at Fontenay, and then at Zolder. The lap times were promising, but I’m holding back on any forecast. During the previous seasons the level of driving in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series has continually increased, and the Vilarino, Kumpen, Bouchut, Longin, Cheever, Garcia and others are all serious contenders!"
At this present time De Doncker still does not know whether he will compete in the Elite 1, Elite 2 categories... or even both! "One thing is for sure, I know that I’ll be at the wheel of the Mustang Insulco Motorsport 98 for the first race of the season in Valencia, in Spain, during the weekend of 25th and 26th April. After that we will see. Finding the ideal teammate is not simple, one thing at a time..." In the immediate future Eric De Doncker will continue his rediscovery of the discipline, heading off to the Netherlands..."I can’t wait to drive some laps on the small Venray oval circuit, which will host one of the two meetings on this type of circuit this season. I have to admit that I’m new to racing on oval circuits, I don’t know them at all! But I’m looking forward to discovering it. I have already noticed that the car is sensitive to tuning, which bodes well... even though my objective remains unchanged: first and foremost to have fun! I reckon I’m on the right track..."
For full details it is worth noting that the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series 2015 will be calling on the circuits of (Spain, standard track), Venray (The Netherlands, oval), Brands-Hatch (England, standard track), Tours (France, oval) and Magione (Italy, standard track), prior to a final in... Zolder, Belgium, during the weekend of the 3rd and 4th October. We are in for some real sport!
