Anthony Kumpen, Gabriele Gardel, Bert and Stienes Longin to compete full-time, third car added for selected events
Daytona Beach, FLA - There is only one goal in the 2016 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season for the PK Carsport team: being at the front. ELITE 2 Division race winner Gabriele Gardel will join Anthony Kumpen, Bert Longin and Stienes Longin in Belgian team's lineup and a third car will be entered for selected events.
After winning the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series Championship in his debut season in 2014 and finishing fourth in points in 2015, Anthony Kumpen is looking to build on his experience in NASCAR Xfinity Series in the US to regain the title at the wheel of the brand new #24 Leaseplan Chevrolet SS.
"We want to be on top in ELITE 1 and ELITE 2 Division and also in the Teams Championship. We had good speed last year, but we missed our goals, so we worked hard on every aspects and every detail of our preparation during the winter," said the Hasselt-Native, who showed great potential in his debut at the Daytona International Speedway. "The goal is to make the team stronger and I believe that with the addition of Gabriele we made another step forward."
Bert Longin will take part in his third season in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series ELITE 1 Division at the wheel of the #11 Van Reeth Chevrolet SS with podium finishes and consistency as his main goals.
"The new NASCAR Whelen Euro Series car is a great improvement and I believe the entire Series is making a big step forward, it will be more competitive than ever," said Longin. "We worked hard with the team to enter the season at the highest level possible. I don't want to put too much pressure on myself this year. I want to avoid mistakes, put together solid good races and aim for the podium."
The Belgian will be paired once again with his son Stienes, who is aiming straight at the ELITE 2 title after winning his first NASCAR race at Tours Speedway and finishing fourth in points to bring home the Rookie Cup.
"Last year was very important for me, because I took an important step in my career, joining a professional team in a very competitive Series. For this season I am better prepared under every aspect," said the 24-year-old. "I want to compete for the ELITE 2 championship and I think we have what it takes. The competition will be tough for sure, starting from my teammate Gabriele."
Gabriele Gardel will share the #24 Chevrolet SS with Kumpen with the ambition to constantly fight for the win the ELITE 2 Division. The Swiss driver made his NWES debut for PK Carsport in the 2014 Le Mans Finals winning the final race of the season and can count on a vast experience in GT racing.
"I am very happy for this opportunity. I wanted to race in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series since two years and I am excited to finally enter the Series with PK Carsport and this great teammates. I know Bert since a lot of time and I can't wait to be on the grid in a championship where the driver can really make the difference. I will do my best and I will set my goals race by race," said Gardel.
The team will field a third Chevrolet SS for selected events. A rotation of international drivers will take the wheel in the ELITE 1 Division, while Christian Malcharek will race in the ELITE 2 Division looking to gain further experience and continue his progression in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series.
