LONG BEACH, CA (April 4, 2017) - The Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R is headed west to the streets of Long Beach in pursuit of the team's first victory of the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship following a third place performance in the Twelve Hours of Sebring.
Dane Cameron and Eric Curran have shown speed and led laps during the first two races of the 2017 championship season, and both are hoping that will lead to a victory in the BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach. Last season, the Cameron and Curran duo qualified fourth and finished third on the narrow and demanding street course, one of IMSA's winningest drivers knows starting in the front and running a flawless race will be critical to his team's success.
"Compared to our typical weekends, the track time we get is very minimal," said Cameron.
"The car and the drivers need to be ready out of the gates and learn as much as possible every lap to be prepared for the race. During the 100-minute race, everything needs to be perfect; pit stops, passes in traffic, and every corner because you won't have time to get it back with the short distance."
Although running a flawless race is critical, the mindset you enter the weekend with can affect the outcome just as well.
"I absolutely love street courses, and I've had a lot of success on them over the years," stated Cameron. "In general, I feel you have to approach the weekend differently because the track is constantly changing. It goes from being dirty in the first practice session to fast with a lot of grip come race time, which improves the pace and keeps the balance of the car always changing. It's such a fun challenge."
Dane and Eric will make an appearance on Thursday night with the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R at the annual "Thursday Thunder" event taking place at The Pike Outlets where Cameron and Curran will sign autographs for fans from
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
The No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R currently sits third in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship after starting the season with a sixth place finish at Daytona and a third place result at Sebring.
The BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix gets underway with practice on Friday, April 7 at 7:40 a.m. PT, with qualifying for prototype competitors at 6:00 p.m. PT. All on-track activity can be heard on IMSA Radio throughout the weekend.
