LONG BEACH, CA (April 8, 2017) - The defending IMSA WeatherTech Champs no doubt have a fast Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R, but patiently waiting for their day would be an understatement. Dane Cameron and Eric Curran have been consistently fast during the first three races, and both know it's just a matter of time before they celebrate in Victory Lane!
Eric Curran qualified 5th and took over the third spot around the forty-five minute mark in the 100-minute beach classic after passing the No. 70 Prototype, shortly before a full-course yellow at the halfway point. The Whelen Engineering Cadillac took the opportunity under yellow to pit for 4 tires, fuel and a driver change to Dane Cameron. The quick pit-stop kept the Whelen Cadillac in third place behind the No. 2 and No. 10 for the eventual restart. After five minutes of stalking for second, Dane would complete the pass until being overtaken a few laps later.
Around the seventy minute mark, Dane clipped the inside of Turn 8 which shot him into the outside wall, eventually ending his day with an eighth place finish.
Dane Cameron, No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R:
"It was somewhat of a weird race," Cameron said. "We had just got cycled back behind the GTD field which made for a frenzy restart when I got in the car. We were in the thick of the fight and poised for a podium finish or a win today. I hate it for my guys and Whelen Engineering, who had a lot of guests here this weekend. Time to turn the page at Austin and get a good result on the board!"
Eric Curran, No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R:
"Overall, we had a good start to the race," Curran said. "I had a good battle with Tom Long in the Mazda, got by him and made my way up to third. The Whelen Cadillac got better over the long run as we got some heat in the car. The team did an amazing job on the pit stop and got us out behind the No.10. Dane was keeping pace and just clipped the wall, but that's part of racing. We will get the car fixed and get ready for COTA [Circuit of the Americas, next race]. We won't get discouraged and go win COTA!"
The IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship travels to the Circuit of the Americas for the Advanced Auto Parts SportsCar Showdown May 4-6.
